NEW MATERIAL:Compounds of formula I (R is 2W9C straight-chain alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 4-(4-Ethyl-1-cyclohexen-1-yl)-4'-fluorobiphenyl.
USE: Positively anisotropic liquid crystal: the transition point lies in a zone of relatively high temperature and it shows smectic and nematic phases. It is mixed with another liquid crystal and used as a liquid crystal composition resisting relatively high temperature.
PREPARATION: 4-Bromo-4'-aminobiphenyl of formula II is diazotized and hydroborofluoric acid is made to act thereon, then the resultant product of formula III is pyrolyzed to give 4-bromo-4'-fluorobiphenyl of formula IV. Then, butyl lithium is made to act on the product to substitute the bromine atom with lithium and an alkylcyclohexanone is made to act thereon to obtain the compound of formula V. Finally, the compound is heated to effect dehydration to give the compound of formula I.
