Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:A 4,5-Dihydro-4,5-dihydroxyphthalic acid and salt thereof.

USE: Useful as a raw material monomer or synthetic intermediate for heat resistant polymer or electrically conductive polymer. Especially, cis-4,5-dihydro-4,5- dihydroxyphthalic acid can be readily converted to a derivative of cyclic acetal or cyclic ketal, etc., and can be used even when a hydroxyl group hinders the reaction. A salt of 4,5-dihydro-4,5-dihydroxyphthalic acid is stable in an aqueous solution and can be treated as a raw material monomer or synthetic intermediate.

PREPARATION: The aimed compound is obtained from a phthalic acid and/or salt thereof using a microorganism of the genus Pseudomonas lost or reduced in decomposition activity of 4,5-dihydro-4,5-dihydroxyphthalic acid and/or salt thereof.
