USE: Agent for enhancing aroma and taste of cigarette and suppressing irritant taste, or agent for improving aroma and taste of cigarette. The compound harmonizes with the original aroma of tobacco, and shows excellent, long-acting effect such as thickening of the taste, impartment of mildness and fineness to smoke, and suppression of irritant taste. Low dissipation during manufacturing and storing of cigarettes.
PROCESS: The objective compound is prepared by (1) extracting chopped leaf tobacco successively with an organic solvent, and non-aqueous solvent, (2) washing the extract repeatedly with an acidic solution and an alkaline solution, (3) distilling by steam distillation, (4) saturating the distillate with a neutral salt, (5) adding non-aqueous solvent to obtain a neutral component soluble to solvents, and (6) developing the component in a column.
