NEW MATERIAL: A compd. of formula I {where R1 is H, halogen, CN or CF; R2 is H or halogen; R3 is halogen, CF3, OCF3, SCF3, etc.; R4 is R2; X is N or CR5 (R5 is R2); A is optionally branched alkanediyl; and Z is CN or CO-Y [Y is halogen, OH, NH2, alkylamino, alkenylamino, arylamino, hydrazino, alkylthio, O-R6 (R6 is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, etc.), etc.]} and their optically active isomers.

EXAMPLE: Ethyl (R)-α-(6-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethyl-phenoxy)-naphthalen-2-yl- oxy)-propionate.

USE: Herbicides.

PROCESS: The compds. of the formula I are obtd., e.g. by allowing 6-(hetero) aryloxy-2-naphthols of formula II to react with carboxylic acid derivs. of formula II (where Z1 is a nucleophilic releasable group).
