Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL: To compounds are represented by formula I [ring D may have a double bond indicated by the broken line, with the proviso that a C16 -C17 double bond is not present when R<2> has a substituent group; X is keto, H or hydroxyl; R<1> is H or a 1-8C alkyl; R<2> is α-H, α-hydroxyl, α-acetoxy and/or represented by formula II (W is a bond or a 1-12C alkyl; R<3> is a 1-8C alkyl, etc.), etc.]. EXAMPLE: 17 β-(N-t-Butylcarboxamido-7-oxo-androsta-3,5-diene-3-carboxylic acid. USE: A steroid 5-α-reductase inhibitor useful for treating acne vulgaris, seborrhea, female hirsutism, prostate hypertrophy, male pattern bladness, etc. PREPARATION: A compound represented by formula III is oxidized, then brought into contact with an alkaline agent, hydrolyzed and further brought into contact with a reducing agent to afford the compound represented by formula I.
