PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an abnormality of a compression ratio change mechanism, in a variable compression ratio mechanism in which the compression ratio change mechanism is arranged at each cylinder.SOLUTION: In this abnormality diagnosis device of a variable compression ratio mechanism which can switch a compression ratio of an internal combustion engine to at least a first compression ratio and a second compression ratio which is lower than the first compression ratio, when the variable compression ratio mechanism is controlled so that the compression ratio of the internal combustion engine reaches the second compression ratio, the ignition timing of one cylinder is advanced to ignition timing at an advance side with respect to an MBT, which is knock induction ignition timing at which a knock is not generated if an actual compression ratio of the cylinder is the second compression ratio, and the knock is generated if the compression ratio of the cylinder is the first compression ratio, and an abnormality diagnosis of the variable compression ratio mechanism is performed on the basis of the presence or absence of the generation of the knock at that time.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7
