PURPOSE: To make possible to monitor abnormality in a step motor continuously not only at the time of starting and to improve abnormality detection accuracy of an abnormality monitor for the step motor.
CONSTITUTION: The abnormality monitor for step motor comprises resistors 46, 48 for detecting voltage values corresponding to the exciting current flowing through the winding 41 of the step motor, comparators 52, 53 for comparing thus detected voltage value with a predetermined reference value for deciding disconnection or short circuit abnormality, and a microcomputor for deciding abnormality based on the output signal levels of the comparators 52, 53 and taking a countermeasure therefor. Abnormality detection is carried out continuously when the step motor is operating and preferably the abnormality decision is made immediately before switching of exciting phase.
