PURPOSE: To obtain an abrasive material for metal surfaces providing a smooth surface free from lag by compounding a hard inorg. substance for abrasion and a specified soft metal or alloy.
CONSTITUTION: An abrasive material contg. a hard inorg. substance for abrasion and at least one soft metal or alloy selected from zinc, magnesium, aluminum and alloys thereof. Said hard inorg. substance fulfills a function as a physical abrasive material, while the soft metals, etc., cover a metal surface to be abraded and partially protect it to prevent the formation of lag caused by an excess physical force. Examples of the hard inorg. substance include non-oxidative ultrahard ceramics such as silicon carbide, tungsten carbide and boron nitride, oxide abrasive materials such as α-alumina, quartz and cerium oxide or physical abrasive materials such as diamond.
