Abstract:

PURPOSE: To efficiently and surely remove stagnant water in a pipe by impregnating and coating a sheet like fiber base material with a water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer and polymerizing said monomer to form a highly water- absorbable resin.

CONSTITUTION: A fibrous or sponge-like base material 1 such as a pad composed of loosely molded fibers or a carded fiber web is formed to the outer peripheral part of a string-like core material composed of metal or plastic. This base material 1 is impregnated or coated with a water-soluble ethylenic unsaturated monomer and a crosslinking agent is allowed to act on the monomer to polymerize the same to form a water-absorbable resin 2. The absorbing material 3 thus obtained for stagnant water in a pipe is inserted in the pipe from the terminal thereof to be allowed to reach the lowest part and allowed to stand for a definite time to absorb the penetrating stagnant water. Since the water- absorbable polymer composite is used as a water absorbing layer in this absorbing material, the detachment of the resin gel after water absorption is reduced.
