PURPOSE: To bring a workpiece, in cooperation with an existing robotic transfer mechanism, to a required work position with high accuracy and repetition preciseness, by providing the workpiece and a holder with recesses and projections engaging therewith, respectively.
CONSTITUTION: Each longitudinal end part of a length of barstock 2 is provided with two positioning or locating recesses 10. A locating device has a conical locating member 20 and an insert 24 equipped with two gripping fingers 26, and the two gripping fingers 26 are fitted into the recesses 10 when the insert 24 is engaged with the longitudinal end part of the barstock 2. A barstock 2 is brought to a related machine by a robotic transfer mechanism to locate each end part of the barstock 2 near a related gripping insert 24 and a holder 34 is brought close to the barstock 2 to engage each insert 24 with the recesses 10 of each end part of the barstock 2. Cam action of the fingers 26 is exerted on surfaces 16, 18 of the recesses 10 and locating inaccuracy of the barstock 2 by the robotic transfer mechanism can thus be corrected.
