PURPOSE: To provide the titled composition for epoxy resin, liquid at room temperature and having low crystallizability, by adding a saturated alicyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride to a specific mixture of tetrahydrophthalic anhydride.
CONSTITUTION: For example, maleic anhydride is subjected to the Diels-Alder reaction with 1,3-pentadiene and isobutylene to obtain a mixture of cis-3-methyl- Δ4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (cis-3MTHPA) and 4-methyl-Δ4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (4-MTHPA), which is converted to the mixture of cis-3MTHPA, trans-3-methyl-Δ4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride and 4-MTHPA by steric isomerization. The obtained mixture is mixed with a saturated alicyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride of formula (R is H or alkyl) (e.g. hexahydrophthalic anhydride) to obtain the objective composition.
