To provide an active matrix substrate which has structure capable of preventing short circuits between pixel electrodes in a manufacturing process and in which the positional accuracy of the forming of pixel electrodes is enhanced.
This matrix substrate is provided with two kinds of wirings 1, 2 provided on an insulating substrate 11 in a grating shape, swithcing elements 5 respectively provided in the vicinity of intersection points of the both wirings 1, 2, an insulating film for flattening covering the whole of the surface of the insulating substrate so as to flatten the surface of the substrate which is made to become ruggedness by the wirings 1, 2 and switching elements 5 and pixel electrodes 4 to be provided on the insulating film for flattering the electrode 4 in a matrix shape. In this case, recessed groove 23 for preventing short circuits between pixel electrodes 4 in the manufacturing process are formed at areas corresponding to respective alienation parts between adjacent pixels on the insulating film.
