To obtain the subject agent having higher active oxygen generation rate than that for a reducing sugar as a low-molecular compound by including a specific sugar-containing polymer.
This agent is obtained by including a sugar-containing polymer having a repeating structural unit of the formula [Q(OH)q-1 is a monovalent reducing sugar residue resulted from removing one OH from a reducing sugar compound composed of reducing sugar skeleton Q and q OHs bound thereto; R is an alkylene; q is 4 or 5]. The above sugar-containing polymer is obtained by polymerization of a polymerizable sugar ester of the formula Q(OH)q-1-OOC- R-COOCH=CH2 (e.g. 6'-O-adipic acid vinylglucose ester) in the presence of a polymerization initiator such as 2,2'-azoisobutyronitrile, preferably at 30-60°C (if an organic peroxide or azo compound is used as the polymerization initiator). This agent is useful in the fields where germicidal action and deodorizing action are expected.
