To obtain an additive which, when added to an aqueous fine carbonaceous powder slurry, can give a slurry having a reduced viscosity, thus capable of being concentrated and having improved stability in a quiescent state by using a combination of a specified sulfonic polymer and/or its salt with a polyether compound.
This additive comprises a combination of at least either a sulfonic polymer or its salt selected from among the following polymers (A1) and (A2): A1: a polymer obtained by polymerizing a polymerizable aromatic sulfonic monomer with at least one monomer copolymerizable therewith and A2: a polymer obtained by polymerizing a polymerizable aromatic hydrocarbon monomer with at least one monomer copolymerizable therewith and at least one member selected from among a polyether compound, a sulfate thereof and a salt thereof.
