The lubricating surface comprises a base oil having lubricating viscosity, with an amount of at least one hydrocarbon soluble magnesium compound effectively providing greater surface ware reduction than that obtained from a lubricant composition free of the magnesium compound. The lubricant composition contains 0.05 wt.% phosphorus and is free of a calcium detergent.
