PURPOSE: To obtain a fuel composition for a diesel engine capable of extremely reducing floating particulate substances contained in a black smoke discharged in the atmosphere, containing an oxygen-containing compound such as a prescribed carboxylic acid ester, a glycol ether or ester or an oxygen-containing heterocyclic compound.
CONSTITUTION: This particulate reducing additive for a diesel engine is mixed with one or more oxide-containing compounds such as a 2-hydroxy-2- methylaliphatic carboxylic acid ester of formula I (R1 is H or a 1-6C alkyl; R2 is H or a 1-20C alkyl), a glycol alkyl ether, a glycol alkyl ether ester, a glycol diester, a dicarboxylic acid diester, a β-alkoxyisobutyric ester of formula II (R12 is a 1-4C alkyl; R13 is a 1-8C alkyl), a dioxolane of formula III (R14 to R17 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl) or a dioxane of formula IV (R18 to R21 are each H or a 1-2C alkyl) or formula V (R22 to R25 are each H or 1-2C alkyl) and reduces floating particulate substances contained in a black smoke discharged in the atmosphere during high-load operation.
