PURPOSE: To adjust the opening/closing timing of intake/exhaust valves accurately by utilizing a timing belt or a chain (called 'belt body' hereafter) hung between the cam shaft and the crank shaft of an internal combustion engine.
CONSTITUTION: An adjusting mechanism is provided with a timing conversion body 3 which is positioned on a side for stretching a cam shaft side from a crank shaft side and being arranged on the outer circumference surface side of a belt body 7 stretched in an approximately linear shape and a pushing and pressing force energizing member 6 for displacing pressure contact positions of the belt body 7 and the conversion body 3 inward while energizing pushing and pressing force to the timing conversion body 3. The pressure contact positions of the belt body 7 and the conversion body 3 are displaced inward by controlling the pushing and pressing force of the energizing member 6 according to rotating speed or load condition of an internal combustion engine. It is thus possible to control the lead angle of a cam shaft 1A in relation to a crank shaft 5A so as to adjust the opening/closing timings of intake/exhaust valves.
