PURPOSE: To remove chemical species which are volatile and may be captured by including cores contg. capturing agents capable of capturing the chemical species by irreversible reaction therewith and continuously enclosing these cores with semipermeable-gaseous membranes.
CONSTITUTION: The apparatus includes the solid cores which respectively contain the capturing agents and are continuously enclosed by the semipermeable membranes. The term 'solid' refers to a dense and porous solid and a non-liquid and non-gas including a gel. The term 'capturing agent' refers arbitrarily to anion, cation and reducing and neutral chemical species which may be neutralized, reduced, oxidized and complexed by the volatile and capturable species to be removed from an environment including water. The volatile and capturable species may be made acidic, basic or neutral. The semipermeable membranes allow the free permeation of gases but substantially prohibit the permeation of liquid. As a result, the selective removal of the volatile and capturable chemical species is made possible.
