To provide an air conditioner capable of preventing a start heating performance from lowering by controlling the opening of an electronic expansion valve to an opening suitable for an installation state in both forward head installation and reverse head installation.
This air conditioner comprises an outdoor unit 14 having a compressor 2, the electronic expansion valve 6, and an outdoor heat exchanger 4 and an indoor unit 15 disposed to have a height difference relative to the outdoor unit 14 and having an indoor heat exchanger 7. The air conditioner also comprises an outdoor control part 9 which sets the initial opening of the electronic expansion valve 6 at the start of the operation to an opening suitable to the state of the forward head installation in which the indoor unit 15 is installed above the outdoor unit 14 and, when determining that the indoor unit 15 is installed by the reverse head installation in which the indoor unit 15 is installed under the outdoor unit 14, sets the opening of the electronic expansion valve 6 to an opening suitable for the forward head installation.
