To provide an air conditioner efficiently separating oil from gas refrigerant.
An oil separator 4 is divided into a separating part 13, and an oil sump part 14. The separating part is a portion wherein the gas refrigerant forced in from an inlet 7 is swirled to separate the oil. The oil sump part 14 is a portion wherein the separated oil having run along an inner wall of the separating part 13 accumulates. In the oil separator 14, a sectional area of the oil sump part 14 is larger than a sectional area of the separating part 13. If the sectional area of the oil sump part 14 is larger than the sectional area of the separating part 13, capacity can be enlarged with a shorter longitudinal length than when the whole oil separator is a cylindrical shape as is conventional. By this, an oil level 12 of the oil sump part 14 is lowered. If the oil level 12 is lowered, an oil flinging up prevention effect is improved, and oil separation efficiency of the whole oil separator 4 is improved.
