To increase the operating range of a heating operation when an HFC-type refrigerant is used by securing abilities while suppressing high pressure from rising during the heating operation, especially during an intermediate period when either outdoor temperature or indoor temperature is high.
In the air conditioner, a compressor 3, a four-way valve 13, an outdoor heat exchanger 4, an outdoor expansion valve 9 and a receiver 18 are sequentially connected to one another by piping, and an outdoor unit 1 having an outdoor fan 8 and an indoor unit 2 having an indoor heat exchanger 12, an indoor expansion valve 17 and an indoor fan 16 are connected to each other by indoor-to-outdoor connection gas piping 10 and indoor-to-outdoor connection liquid piping 11 to constitute a refrigerating cycle. The air conditioner has a sensor 6 for detecting high-pressure side pressure within the refrigerating cycle and a bypass valve 5 provided in the piping bypassing from the discharge side piping of the compressor 3 to a space between the outdoor heat exchanger 4 and the outdoor expansion valve 9. When the high-pressure side pressure is equal to or greater than a set value during the heating operation, the bypass valve 5 opens.
