To provide an air conditioner that has superior air conditioning performance and good operating efficiency.
The air conditioner includes: a filter 2 for removing dust from air passing through an indoor unit 1; an imaging unit 4 for taking pictures of the filter 2; and a control unit (not shown in Fig) for detecting dust out of the image taken by the imaging unit 4 and deciding the cleaning timing for the filter 2. If the filter 2 is cleaned according to the cleaning timing decided by the control unit, the amount of electricity use is prevented from increasing to more than necessary as a result of, for example, setting the temperature or the air volume higher since air conditioning does not work well for too much accumulated dust, or a wasteful use of electricity by cleaning the filter without much accumulated dust is avoided.
