In order to provide an air conditioner with good efficiency and improved reliability during both natural circulation operation and forced circulation operation, this air conditioner is capable of switching between a refrigeration cycle operation that is based on forced circulation, wherein a compressor (1), a condenser (3), and an evaporator (7) are sequentially connected by pipes and a refrigerant is circulated forcibly, and a refrigeration cycle operation that is based on natural circulation, wherein the evaporator and a condenser arranged at a higher position than this evaporator are connected by a liquid-side connecting pipe (5) and a gas-side connecting pipe (8), and the refrigerant is circulated naturally. In addition, this air conditioner is equipped with: a bypass pipe (30) that connects the liquid-side connecting pipe and the gas-side connecting pipe; a refrigerant reservoir (10) provided on this bypass pipe; a liquid-side on-off valve (27) provided on the liquid-side connecting pipe side of this refrigerant reservoir; and a gas-side on-off valve (26) provided on the gas-side connecting pipe side of the refrigerant reservoir. The amount of refrigerant circulating in the refrigeration cycle is adjusted by moving the refrigerant circulating in the refrigeration cycle into or out of the refrigerant reservoir.
