PURPOSE: To save energy for backup operation and to produce a compressor protecting effect by a method wherein when open air cooling capacity is insufficient, backup operation of a compressor is effected as an air amount regulating mechanism is controlled so that the temperature of mixture air of the open air introduced to the air inlet side of a vaporizer and return air from the indoor side is not reduced to a value lower than a frosting temperature.
CONSTITUTION: When a room temperature is higher than a room temperature set value by a value exceeding a differential in a range wherein an open air temperature exceeds a compressor backup operation minimum opening air temperature and is lower than an open air cooling switching opening air temperature, a damper mechanism 9 is brought into a full closed state, a compressor 1 is run, and brought into a compressor backup operation mode wherein all the open air is introduced when open air cooling capacity is insufficient. When an open air temperature is reduced in a compressor backup operating state to a value lower than a backup operation minimum open air temperature, the damper mechanism 9 is stopped at a point where a mixture air temperature attains a value equal to the backup operation minimum open air temperature. Since temperature at the inlet of a vaporizer 8 is not reduced to a value lower than the backup operation minimum open air temperature, there is no fear of the vaporizer being frosted. Since the damper mechanism 9 is kept in an opening position lower than the minimum opening position of the damper mechanism 9 in which cooling operation is effected, an effect to save energy is produced.
