To protect a load cell from an excessive impulsive load when the impulsive load is applied to a clamping mechanism by some reason.
A workpiece 1 is joined to another workpiece (not shown) in such a state that the joining planes are butted with each other and the respective axes are aligned with each other. The workpiece 1 is clamped by a collet 3 at a top end thereof. A clamping mechanism 2 is vertically movable along a slider 13. The load cell 8 is supported on a base 11 via a height adjusting mechanism 15. The top portion of the load cell 8 abuts against a rear end face of the clamping mechanism 2. A mechanical stopper 9 is arranged close to the lower side of the rear end face of the clamping mechanism 2. The load cell 8 can be protected from that an excessive impulsive load is transmitted thereto when an impulsive load is applied to the clamping mechanism 2, by appropriately adjusting the relative height (G) of the load cell 8 with respect to the working face of the mechanical stopper 9.
