Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-molecular-weight biodegradable aliphatic polyester copolymer having excellent mechanical strengths by polycondensing an aliphatic hydroxy acid with an aliphatic diol and an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid in a specified ratio.
CONSTITUTION: This copolymer mainly consists of 98-70mol% aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid units (O-R1-CO (wherein R1 is a bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group)), 1-15mol% aliphatic diol units [O-R2-O (wherein R2 is a bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group] and 1-15mol% aliphatic dicarboxylic acid units [OC-R3-CO](wherein R3 is a direct bond or a bivalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group)] and has a number-average molecular weight of 10000-150000. It is desirable that this copolymer is produced by directly polycondensing lactic acid with an aliphatic diol and an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid in the presence of a germanium compound or titanium compound as the catalyst.
