PURPOSE: To obtain an alkaline air cell which maintains a given discharge capacity for a long period of time and has a high preservation performance by packing moisture absorbing bodies into the space provided between a gas electrode and an air introducing hole.

CONSTITUTION: Moisture absorbing bodies are packed into an air chamber 7, which is a space formed between a gas electrode 3 and an air introducing hole 8. As the moisture absorbing bodies, at least one substance chosen from among those which undergo self-deliquescence by absorbing a given amount of steam at a given temperature, such as sodium acetate trihydrate, oxalate dihydrate, magnesium acetate tatrahydrate, ammonium chloride, mixture consisting of ammonium chloride and potassium nitrate, sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate, is used. The moisture absorbing bodies are held in a porous body before being packed into the air chamber 7.
