Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL: An alkyl 3-methylthiobutyrate of the formula [wherein R is a 4 or 5C (optionally branched) alkyl].

EXAMPLE: Isobutyl 3-methylthiobutyrate.

USE: Useful as a flavor component, capable of flavoring food and excitatory food and drink and fresh red fruits such as berries and Rubus, for example used in cigarette products, drugs, toothpaste, etc. To realize a flavoring effect, it is used in an amount of at least 1,000 pts.wt. based on the composition.

PREPARATION: For example, a methanolic solution of sodium methoxide is added to isobutyl crotonate, a mercaptan gas is fed through a gas intake tube and passed through the reaction mixture within 24 hr, and the reaction mixture is kept at about 5°C. A compound of the formula is obtained by vacuum distillation.
