PURPOSE: To obtain an alkyl aryl sulfone useful as a dielectric material, a functional fluid or the like in the form a highly pure stable liquid by reacting an aryl compound with an alkylsulfonic acid and a phosphorus reactant.
CONSTITUTION: An aryl compound of formula I (wherein Ar is a mono-, heteroaromatic, fused aromatic or the like; Y is a I-12 C alkyl, a 3-10 C cycloalkyl or the like; and n is 1-10) is reacted with an alkylsulfonic acid of formula II (wherein R is a 1-18 C alkyl, a 3-10 C cycloalkyl or the like) and a phosphorus reactant to obtain at least one position isomer of an alkyl aryl sulfone of formula III. The reaction is carried out by heating (to about 40 to 220°C, desirably about 80-130°C) in the presence of the reactant such as phosphorus oxychloride or phosphorus pentachloride in an amount at least equal to the stoichiometric amount of the compound of formula II.
