Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a method for nucleophilically alkylating a nitrogen- containing aromatic heterocyclic compound with a low toxic reagent by a radical reaction under mild conditions.

CONSTITUTION: A method for alkylating a nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocyclic compound comprises irradiating a mixture of (A) the nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocyclic compound, (B) an alkyl halide and (C) a silane compound having a silicon atom-silicon atom bond with light. As a specific example, the application of the method to a mixture of (A) a lepidine-camphor sulfonic acid salt, (B) 1-iodoadamantane and (C) tetrakis (trimethylsilyl) silane gives 2-(1-adamantyl)-4-methylquinoline in a high yield.
