This alkylglycoside for surfactant or cosmetic base has <-5 Gardner hue of 30 wt.% aqueous solution of an alkylglycoside having pH 12 to 14 exhibited after the solution is allowed to stand for three days at 25°C. This method for producing an alkylglycoside comprises reacting saccharides with monohydric alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst and then treating the reaction product with an absorbent containing a complex metal oxide in an amount of 0.5-50 wt.% based on total weight of saccharides, monohydric alcohol and components other than the above components.
