NEW MATERIAL:The α-5-hexenylcinnamaldehyde of formula I.

USE: Useful as a component of a perfumery composition. It has muge-like and floral note havng fresh green feeling, and gives strong fresh feeling. It imparts nearly natural fragrance to conventional compounded perfume. Useful widely as an additive of perfume, soap, detergent, shampoo, hair rinse, etc. The amount of the active component of formula I is preferably 0.5W40wt% in the whole composition.

PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be prepared e.g. by reacting benzaldehyde of formula II with 7-octenal of formula III in the presence of an alkali, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide, etc. such as caustic soda, caustic alkali etc.
