NEW MATERIAL: A compd. represented by formula (wherein R is 1-4C alkyl; and (n) is 0, 1 or 2).

USE: This new material is used for preparing a curable resin compsn. and useful for coating materials for the purpose of imparting anti-corrosion, flame resistance or flame retardancy, electric insulating varnish; an adhesive; a laminated product used in furniture, a building material, a sheath material, and an electric material, especially, a molded product requiring low dielectric constant and good thermal properties.

PROCESS: Corresponding known alpha, alpha', alpha"-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,5- triisoproplylbenzene is reacted with a hydroxyl group to be treated with a compd. generating a cyanate group (e.g. cyan bromide) to obtain the compd. represented by the formula. The reaction is performed in the presence of a base (e.g. triethylamine) at a temp. of -40 to 40°C in an inert solvent such as alcohol. The compd. represented by the formula is heated alone to become a reticulated state to obtain a cured resin having heat resistance.
