To obtain the subject polymer capable of forming an anisotropic melted material and becoming a main chain type thermoplastic liquid crystalline polymer material by reacting a specific diester with a diol.
This ester/ether alternating polymer is an objective polymer of formula I {M1, M2 are each a mesogen group of formula II, etc.; F1, F2 are each (CH2)n [(n) is 1-20 integer]; α is 2-10000 integer}. Further, in order to obtain the above polymer, (A) a compound of formula III is preferably reacted with (B) a diol expressed by the formula: HO(F2)OH (e.g.; 1,3- propanediol)e.g. at 100-400°C temperature for 0.1-24hr without the presence of a solvent or in the presence of a solvent such as pentane, etc., and in the presence of a catalyst such as p-toluensulfonic acid, etc., and the component (A) is preferably a compound obtained by reacting a hydroxycarboxylic acid of the formula HO-M-COOH (M is M1 or M2) with an alcohol are reacting the obtained compound of the formula: HO-M-COOR with a dihalide of the formula: X(F1)X (X is a halogen).
