Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain an aromatic amine, especialy amino-phenol, useful for medicines, agricultural chemicals, and dyes, in high yield, by reacting a phenol with ammonia, a primary or secondary amine, in the presence of a specific catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: One mole of a phenol is aminated with one or more moles, preferably 5W30 moles, of ammonia, a primary or secondary amine, preferably in the gaseous phase, at 230W500°C, in the presence of a catalyst comprising gallium oxide, e.g. gallous or gallic oxide. Mono- or dihydric phenols e.g. cresol or resorcin, may be cited as the phenol.
