Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain an alloy composed principally of amorphous phase, excellent in mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and workability, and containing rare earth elements as principal components by mixing Al, specific metals, and rare earth elements including Y into a specific proportion, melting the resulting mixture, and then carrying out ultra-rapid cooling in an inert-gas atmosphere.

CONSTITUTION: A molten alloy 3 having a composition represented by a general formula Al100-x-yNyLny [where M means at least one element selected from Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, and W, Ln means at least one kind selected from Y and lanthanoide series rare earth elements, such as La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Yb, or misch metal, and the symbols (x) and (y) stand for >0-55atomic% and 30-90atomic%, respectively] is poured into a quartz tube 1 and sprayed through a hole 5 in the bottom onto a rapidly rotating cooling body roll 2 by means of the application of Ar gas pressure to undergo ultra-rapid cooling, by which a thin foil body 4 having a structure in which amorphous structure comprises ≥50vol.% is formed. By this method, the thin amorphous alloy foil having superior characteristics can be obtained.
