PURPOSE: To new amphiphilic compound which has its molecules particularly suitably structured in highly orderly arrangements by an LB method and especially useful for the manufacture of an optical element for optical devices having nonlinear optical characteristics.
CONSTITUTION: This amphiphilic compound of the formula I, e.g. 7,13-dioxo-2,18- bis-phenyl-10-[4-(4-dodecyl-2-nitrophenylapizo)phenyl]-2,6,10,14,18- pentaazanonadecane is produced from 4' (N,N-bis-2-carboxyethylamino)-4- dodecyl-2-nitroazobenzene as the starting material. An oligomer and a polymer are produced from the compound of the formula I. In the formula I, X is -C(=O)NH-, -NHC(=O)-, the formula II (M is a molecular component), the formula III, etc.; (x), (y) are 1 to 6; B1, B2 are each phenyl, alkylphenyl, etc., P is alkyl, etc., Q is alkyl, etc.
