PURPOSE: An ion-exchange membrane that is made by crosslinking a thin film of a polymer containing a specific amount of amino groups which is supported on a porous substance, with a specific compound interfacially, whereby the equivalent ratio of anion exchange groups to cation exchange ones is in a prescribed range and the effective thickness is very small.
CONSTITUTION: A thin membrane of polymer that contains 1.0W23 milliequivalent/gram of primary and secondary active amino groups, 0W18 milliequivalent/gram of tertiary amino groups and/or ammonium salt groups in a molecule, totaling 2.0W23 milliequivalent/gram amino groups, is formed on a porous support. Then, a polyfunctional aromatic compound having 2 or more functional groups such as carbonyl halide or sulfonyl halide is used to effect interfacial crosslinking so that the crosslinked polymer contains the structural unit of formulaI[Y is CO, SO2; M is atom or group dissolving as a cation; m+n is 1W3], 0.5 milliequivalent/gram of ammonium base and 0.05 milliequivalent/gram of YOM groups where the equivalent ratio of the both groups is 20/1W1/2.
