To obtain an antacid which possesses neutralization activity for gastric juice and is usable in place of magnesium-aluminum-based antacid by making the antacid contain a specific layered double hydroxide.
This antacid contains a layer double hydroxide of the formula [Mg2+1-XFe3+X(OH)2]X+-[CO32-X/n.yH2O]x- ((x) is a real number of larger than 0 and of 0.33 or less; (y) is a real number of larger than 0: (n) is an integer of more than 1) as an active ingredient. This layer double hydroxide is obtained by adding dropwise a mixed aqueous solution of 1M of MgCl2 and 1M of FeCl3 under stirring to an aqueous solution of 1MNa2CO3 kept at 40°C followed by hydrolyzing it and then maturing a solid produced at an enhanced temperature of 70°C for 1 hour. It is preferable that this active ingredient is orally administrated at a dosage of 0.1-10g, preferably 0.2-5g, usually once a day. By this process, it is possible to provide an antacid which is no need to use aluminum that the possibility causing Alzheimer disease is pointed out.
