PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound, having low dyeability for resin films, excellent in image brightness, durability, compatibility, etc., with a liquid crystal and useful as a dichroic blue coloring matter for a polymer-dispersed type liquid crystal display element, etc.

CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I [R is H, a halogen, methyl or methoxy; (m) is 1-10; (n) is 0-6], e.g. a compound expressed by formula II. The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by reacting 1,5- dihydroxy-4,8-dinitroanthraquinone with a compound expressed by formula III in the presence of boric acid in sulfuric acid, further treating the resultant compound with a reducing agent such as sodium (hydro)sulfide or glucose, providing a crude product expressed by formula I and purifying the prepared crude product according to the recrystallization, column chromatography, etc.
