PREPARATION: A compd. of formula III (wherein m is 0W4) such as tribromoquinizarin is reacted with 2-aminothiophenol or formula IV in the presence of an acid acceptor such as KOH in a (non)polar solvent at -50W250°C to obtain a compd. of formula V. The compd. is halogenated in a solvent such as glacial acetic acid in the presence or absence of a catalyst such as ZnCl2 at -50W250°C by using Cl2, Br2 or I2 to obtain an anthraquinone derivative of formula I.
