Title:
PRODUCTION OF GLASS
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3103879
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a high quality glass or glass ceramic by promoting degassing and homogenizing by stirring a melt by a magnetic field.
SOLUTION: A spiral convection current is generated in a melt of an oxide, a sulfide, a halogenated material, a nitride, an oxynitride, etc., by applying a vertical magnetic field to the melt. A cause of defects such as seeds, cords and striae is removed from the melt by the spiral convection current. The melt treated by the magnetic field is quenched by extruding the melt on a plate, a mold, a roll, etc., or pulling the melt by a pulling machine. The melt is more homogenized by applying a horizontal magnetic field to the melt to cause a forced flows from the bottom to the surface or from the surface to the bottom. The homogenization of the melt is promoted by applying a pulse-like vertical or horizontal magnetic field thereto.
