PURPOSE: To obtain the subject pharmaceutical composition, containing a specific pentacyclic triterpenoid as an active ingredient and hardly exhibiting aldosterone-like side effects.
CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition containing a compound expressed by the formula (R is hydroxy lower alkyl, formyl or carboxyl), preferably bryonolic acid, i.e. 3β-hydroxy-D:C-friedoolean-8-en-2S-oic acid in which R is carboxyl as an active ingredient. The above-mentioned compound is capable of exhibiting excellent anti-inflammatory action on inflammations, such as hepatitis, pancreatitis, nephritis or arthritis, and having excellent anti-allergic action on allergic diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, rhinitis, pollinosis, bronchial asthma or eczema. The dose thereof is preferably 0.001-0.3g/kg body weight/ time in the case of oral administration.
