PURPOSE: To prepare an anti-tumor substance by extracting fresh meat of Tunicata with an aqueous medium, adding a hydrophilic organic solvent to the extract, and purifying the resulting precipitate.
CONSTITUTION: The fresh meat of Tunicata (pref. that of Halocynthia or Styela genus) is ground, and extracted with distilled water (or a weakly basic or acidic buffer solution at about 5°C. The extract is centrifuged to separate the solid residue, and the liquid is precipitated with a hydrophilic organic solvent such as methanol or with vairous salts. The precipitate is separated from the liquid by centrifugal separation, etc., and purified by a solvent method or ultra-filtration. The substance thus obtained is effective to elongate the life of mouse affected by P-388 leukemia.
