NEW MATERIAL:Antibiotic KO-3988A having the following physical and chemical properties. Element composition: C22H26O7 (high resolving power mass spectrometry). Molecular weight: 402 [field desorption(FD) mass spectrometry]. Melting point: 182-183°C. Specific rotatory power: [α] =-46° (C=0.58, chloroform). Solubility: insoluble in hexane and water and soluble in methanol, ethanol, dichloromethane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and acetone. Neutral substance. Color reaction: positive in sulfuric acid, and iodine coloring.
USE: A multiplication inhibitor against HeLa cell not showing antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi.
PREPARATION: A bacterium such as Streptomyces KO-3988 (FERM P-10369) belonging to the genus Streptomyces, capable of producing antibiotic KO-3988A is cultured under an aerobic condition at 27°C for 3-6 days.
