NEW MATERIAL:An antibiotic TM-531C expressed by the formula and a salt thereof. Elementary analysis: Found values (%) as C47H77O15Na C, 62.18; H, 8.60; Na, 2.44. Molecular weight: 904. Melting point: 190.4W191.6°C. Specific rotatory power: [α]D25=+27.4° (C=0.5 methanol). Solubility: Insoluble in water in methanol, thanol acetone, etc. Color reactions: Positive to the iodine reaction, potassium permanganate and vanillin-sulfuric acid reactions.
USE: An antimicrobial agent having improved growth inhibitory action on Gram- positive bacteria.
PROCESS: An antibiotic TM-531 strain, e.g. (FERM-P No.4737), belonging to the genus Streptomyces, is cultivated in a liquid culture medium at a pH of about 7 and 25W40°C under aerobic conditions by the shaking, submerged culture method with aeration, etc. The culture is then extracted and purified with an alcohol, acetone, etc., to give the aimed antibiotic TM-531C.
