Abstract:

To extract a compound having anticancer action from physiologically active substances in the bark of Japan ceder (Cryptomeria japonica).

The objective compound is an abietane-type diterpene quinone compound that has anticancer action and is represented by following general formula 1 (wherein Me means methyl group). This compound is obtained by extraction treatment of powdery bark from a needle-leaf tree with a nonpolar organic solvent and chromatographing the extract through the silica gel column, eluting the bark components with a hexane-ether mixed solvent and isolating the objective compound from the eluted bark components through the medium- pressure liquid chromatography with a hexane-dichloromethane mixed solvent.
