To obtain a new liquid crystal compound useful for a component for practical liquid crystal material, having a wide temperature range of an antiferroelectric phase and a low melting point.
This compound is shown by the formula ((m) is an integer of 6-12; X is H or F; (p) is an integer of 5-7; (q) is 2 or 4; C* is an asymmetric carbon atom) such as R-(+)-3-fluoro-4-(1-trifluoromethyl-6- ethoxyhexyloxycarbonyl)phenyl-4'-decanoyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate. The compound is obtained by reacting an alkyl bromide with a sodium alkyl oxide to give an ether compound, carrying out carbon increasing reaction by using Grignard reagent and trifluoroacetic acid, reduction of a ketone and acetylation a racemic alcohol with acetic anhydride to form an acetate and subjecting the acetate to optical resolution with a lipase.
