PURPOSE: To advance the start-up of a main agitator and mix a slurry of a coal with a petroleum residual oil after the vacuum distillation well with ease, by using an apparatus having the main agitator movable upward and downward in the center of a tank and plural auxiliary agitators movable upward and downward at the bottom of the tank.
CONSTITUTION: The internal temperature of a tank 4 is increased to 200°C, and the viscosity of a slurry 6 of a coal with a petroleum residual oil after the vacuum distillation is measured. Apparatuses 13 for moving agitating blades 12 of auxiliary agitators 8 up and down at the bottom of the tank 4 is operated to give the stimulation to the slurry 6 until the viscosity of the total slurry 6 is reduced. The apparatuses 13 for moving the agitating blades 12 are then operated to return the agitating blades 12 automatically to the original positions, and an apparatus 3 for moving a main agitator 1 up and down is simultaneously operated to lower agitating blades 9 slowly to given positions while rotating the blades 9 at a low speed. The interior of the tank 4 is kept at a constant temperature, e.g. 200°C, while agitating the slurry 6 only with the main agitator 1, and valves 17 and 19 at the bottom of the tank 4 are opened. A valve 20 of a slurry feed pipe 18 is closed to operate a pump 16 and circulate the slurry 6 through a piping 15. The slurry 6 is then fed to a gasifying furnace.
