PURPOSE: To compact a coal for coke with good processability using a compact apparatus, by utilizing the reciprocating motion of the piston of a hydroulic cylinder as tamping means for the coal.

CONSTITUTION: After cylinder supporting frame 7 is lowered to the inside bottom of mold 1, supply of powder coal c by conveyer 9, reciprocating motion of tamping member 9 by hydraulic cylinder 6, and horizontally reciprocating movement of the supporting frame 7 are started. Thus, the supplied powder coal c is successively compacted as compacted coal c', and when the supporting fram 7 is simultaneously actuated upwardly by the stress of the tamping member 9 with increase in an amt. of the compacted coal, drum 14 of winch 11 pulls the supporting frame 7 up to keep tension of rope 15 at a set value. When the compacted coal c' is molded into a predetermined size by continuing the above operation, it i discharged longitudinally by hoisting the supporing frame 7, removing end plate 3 and opening side plate 2.
